"There was I sneaking in a last quiet snap in the studio and this wonderful lot flooded in to say goodbye. I’ll miss you!"

Dermot, who has previously worked for BBC News and ITN, could be found presenting on weekday evenings for the last number of years.

Before that he fronted a Sunday morning political programme called 'Murnaghan'.

He also presented the BBC Two daytime show Eggheads from 2003 until 2014, as well as its short-lived spin-off series Are You an Egghead? in 2008 and 2009.

In a memo to Sky staff announcing his departure, the station's boss John Ryley described Dermot as "a formidable force in British television news".

He continued: "For more than 16 years at Sky he’s anchored our coverage of extraordinary financial chaos, political upheaval, revolutions, disease, and royal tipping points.

"History will remember Dermot as the first broadcaster to break the news of Queen Elizabeth II’s death last September outside Buckingham Palace."

"It is as a superb interviewer that I will remember Dermot. Forensic, unrelenting and like all the best interviewers, a listener," Ryley added.

Following the news, fans have flooded Dermot with well wishes, as one said: "Ahh it won’t be Sky News without you Dermot! Best of luck x."

A second commented: "Well Deserved Dermot….I remember your first day my wife said now there’s a handsome man."

"Good luck Dermot and congrats on your service with Sky News," said a third.

While a fourth replied: "You've been great. Best wishes."

Sky News Tonight airs from 7pm on Sky News.
